Compassion in Action – Public Talk by His Eminence Thuksey Rinpoche

Globalisation, the development of the virtual world, instant and plentiful methods of communication have paradoxically isolated us from each other and call for more humanisation.

One needs to develop benevolence towards oneself and others, to be able to listen to, and be open to others. Clear understanding is required for empathy and compassion to exist.

His Eminence Kyabje Thuksey Rinpoche will give us an overview of what compassion in action really is.

Born in Ladakh in 1986, His Eminence Kyabje Thuksey Rinpoche was recognised by the Dalai Lama and the Gyalwang Drukpa as the reincarnation of the first Kyabje Thuksey Rinpoche – a prominent figure of the Drukpa Lineage. After his exile in India, he ensured the continuity and legacy of the teaching of this particular School of Tibetan buddhism, establishing one of its main monasteries, Druk Thubten Sangag Choeling, in Darjeeling, India.

His Eminence Thuksey Rinpoche spent most of his childhood in this monastery before continuing his education at the prestigious University of Tango, Bhutan, for 9 years. An accomplished meditation master, His Eminence has been given many responsibilities, including the the management of the monastery of Darjeeling and the Druk White Lotus School situated in Ladakh as well as the Drukpa centres of buddhist studies and meditation in Europe.

His Eminence is part of the young generation of Drukpa spiritual masters who bring a contemporary and modern approach of Buddhism and spirituality.

Having meditated on love and compassion, I have forgotten the difference between ‘I’ and ‘others’ – Milarepa

  • Sengey Tsewa Retreat and Birthday Celebrations in Kathmandu

Sengey Tsewa Retreat and Birthday Celebrations in Kathmandu

Sengey Tsewa is a practice of Prajna Paramita (the practice of Wisdom). Dakini Machig Labdron offered the teaching of Sengey Tsewa (The Revelry with the Lion) to the Great Omniscient Kunkhyen Pema Karpo (the Fourth Gyalwang Drukpa 1527-1592) through his master Awa Dhutipa. Ever since then, it has been the main practice of many historical yogis of Vajrayana Buddhism.

The benefit of the Sengey Tsewa practice can be categorised into two parts:
    • Through the practice of non-attachment towards one’s own body, one will be able to free oneself from sufferings such as diseases and unwanted incidents and accumulate merits to eventually attain the form of Buddha (Rupakaya).
    • Through the practice of non-attachment (Shunyata) towards one’s own conceptual thoughts, one will be liberated from the mental distractions and eventually attain the full realisation of (Dharmakaya) the complete omniscience (Wisdom of Buddha).

The forthcoming Sengey Tsewa Retreat, to be held at Druk Amitabha Mountain in Kathmandu and led by His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa and his spiritual sons, Their Eminences Gyalwa Dokhampa and Drukpa Thuksey Rinpoche, will also include an explanation and transmission of Chod practice.

On 28th February, before the 6-day retreat, there will be a joint birthday celebration for His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa and His Eminence Drukpa Thuksey Rinpoche.

Pel Drukpa Tcheutsok Congregation in Plouray is organising a package tour for those who wish to attend the birthday celebrations and Sengey Tsewa retreat as a group. This time the birthday celebrations and retreat will be followed by a pilgrimage to Maratika in the eastern part of Nepal, which is nine hours by road from Kathmandu. We will be staying there for two days in local guest houses and we will practise Guru Drakpo Kilaya in the sacred Cave where Guru Rinpoche and Mandarava mastered the Amitayus Practice of Immortality.  We will therefore accumulate great merits and powerful purification.

The whole trip will run from 27th February to March 11th and will include hotel accomodation in Kathmandu and Maratika, transportation to and from Druk Amitabha Mountain, the registration fee for the retreat and all meals.

  • 6th Annual Drukpa Council

    6th Annual Drukpa Council

As taught by His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa, the entire practice of Buddhism is to inspire the practitioners to open their hearts so that the blessing/understanding will be there without any obstacle or difficulty.  The focus of teachings and practices such as chanting, spiritual dances, spiritual yoga, recitations, pujas, etc. is to inspire us to achieve an understanding mind, which also known as the Mind or Heart of Enlightenment.

There are three categories of Buddhist practitioners, the ‘Yogis’ who have renounced worldly things and spend their lives in retreats and meditation practice, monks and nuns who observe the precepts and are full time practitioners of the Dharma and finally lay people who live in samsara taking care of families and friends.  For lay people there are many challenges coping with both negative and positive experiences however we can practice Buddhism to subdue the negative or afflictive emotions by participating in and organising Dharma.

The Annual Drukpa Council aspires to create a forum for practitioners and those seeking the path by providing a space where all these different aspects converge, by inviting great masters of the Drukpa lineage, preparing and coordinating a programme that includes teachings and group practices, plus a great gathering of the sangha from far and near to inspire and support those seeking the path of Dharma.

This is now in the sixth year of the Annual Drukpa Council we would like to thank those who have supported us thus far.  If anyone is interested, please visit www.drukpacouncil.org to find out how you can participate in and/or support this unique event.
